Fed: Kurnell dumping greeted with joy, says Baird
Federal MP BRUCE BAIRD says the dumping of the second Sydney airport option of Kurnell
Peninsula by cabinet has been greeted with great joy by residents.
Cabinet has apparently ruled out Kurnell as a site, kept Badgerys Creek in reserve
as a future site, moved to upgrade both Bankstown and Canberra airports, and ditched a
Sydney-Canberra very fast train.
Kurnell, where Captain James Cook first stepped ashore on the opposite side of Botany
Bay from Sydney Airport, emerged as an option a fortnight ago.
Mr BAIRD, the member for Cook, has told ABC Radio his electorate had been concerned
about the impact of aircraft noise.
But Mr BAIRD has acknowledged Sydney Airport will eventually reach full capacity, and
other solutions are needed.
He says the long-term answer appears to be to an east coast railway integrated with
a new airport, possible in Goulburn or Newcastle.
